Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
