Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
