The English and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
