EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
